Synergy is a state of group energy that is both magical and seemingly miraculous. When groups flow in synergy, work seems effortless, help appears out of nowhere, and creativity abounds. Synergy means diverse individuals working in harmony, synchronizing energy into one coherent flow of creation. True synergy is rare and illusive, but once we experience it, we are amazed. Thereafter, we know it, never forget it, and long to be able to reproduce it.
When groups work in synergy, it creates abundant amounts of free energy, which not only energizes group members, but attracts resources both human and material. This energy is contagious and exciting, and many want to participate. Consequently, work is fun, easy and extremely successful. Everyone wants to join in.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could create synergy whenever we wanted instead of always seeming to happen upon it accidentally?
Sadly, synergy is not a science. It can’t be manufactured by knowledge, discipline and will. It can’t be forced or put into a formula because it depends on the individual energy and the conscious and unconscious choices of each member of a group. While we can make choices about our own energy, we can never control or force the energy of another human.
Nonetheless, we can set the stage for synergy by the choices we make. Those choices will affect the choices others make. First we can learn how to master own energy field. Then we can consciously choose to lay aside our own personal agendas in favor of working toward a group goal, and in so doing, create a safe space for others to do the same. But this is only the first step.
Although we can never be sure what any group member will choose to do with their energy on any given day or time, there are many other choices we you make that contribute to the creation of an environment that is predisposed to synergy. Synergy happens when people feel safe, are OK with sharing ideas that may or may not get attention, and are more tuned to the group goal than their own ego’s needs.
If you are in a position to create your own group, feel into the energy of those you are thinking of asking to join. Does your energy easily harmonize with theirs? Are they relaxed and eager to share ideas without ownership issues, or are they competitive and anxious about being noticed and praised. Are they upset when their ideas are passed over, or unconcerned and on to the next thing. Your choice of members is your paint brush.
If you are already a member of a group where you have not been able to choose your co-workers, observe which members seem more needy than others and what kind of energy (attention) seems to assuage them. Do they need more direction and support? Do they need to be gently urged to give up the limelight? Paying attention and pointing out their strengths goes along way toward helping them accept constructive re-routing.
Close attention to the energy needs in your group can help you provide what will help them relax, feel safe and be able to co-create without feeling slighted and in need of self-protection.
Synergy is an art and its medium is energy. You are the artist.
