Dream:
I am one of the curators of a portrait gallery that specializes in portraits of people from all over the planet. Most of the portraits are very large with the person displayed from head to toe.
One of these large portraits is of a different kind of human – shoulders bowed downward rather than straight across and arms longer than usual. I seem to know that these people are known for their use of a particular kind of weapon that, ironically, looks very much like they do.
The weapon has a long handle and looks like a garden rake except that the end that is straight across with prongs (on a rake), is bowed downward on both sides. In the portrait the person in the picture has one of these weapons with only two prongs.
One day some of these people come to see this portrait. We are happy that they have come and are expecting them to really enjoy seeing a portrait of one of their people. But instead, they become enraged and agitated because the person in the portrait has a two-pronged weapon. These visitors are members of a group that uses three-pronged weapons. There has always been hostility between the two groups because of this difference and the history behind it. The three-prongers are so angry they decide to wage war on the two-prongers thinking the two-prongers must have engineered this slight.
We are amazed that a simple hanging of a portrait can cause a war, but decide that if the absence of a portrait can start a war, perhaps the presence of a portrait can stop a war. We seek out the first three-pronger we can find, make a portrait and hang it in the gallery. Then we invite the two groups to come and view their portraits.
To our horror, both groups show up at the same time. But they are so pleased with their portraits, and the honor we have shown both their groups by including their images, that they start happily chatting to each other and leave on good terms.
This experience is so profound for my fellow curators and I that we make a sign and hang it over the entrance to the portrait gallery. The sign says:
Art has the power to tame passions and end wars.
