Meditation: (On creating a New Earth
I find myself in a large field filled with golden grain of some kind, probably wheat. I am alone in the field but know there must be people somewhere. I quickly cross the field looking for a person I can talk to. My plan is to grab the first person I meet and get them to tell me about their life. I figure this is the easiest way to learn about what life is like here.
Eventually I come to a man working in one of the fields. This field is not a grain field but rather a field full of vegetables. This man is a brown skinned man who looks like he has always worked outside, and seems to be the only one around. He has on jeans, a plaid shirt and a well-worn straw cowboy hat with the side brims turned up.
He tells me his name is Emmanuel and he is a farm worker. And he certainly looks like a typical farm worker where I come from – probably of Hispanic heritage with a slightly different way of speaking English. I ask him to tell me what it is like to be a farm worker on New Earth.
He says he enjoys his job very much. He lives in a nice house with his wife and 3 children. He doesn’t own the house he lives in because it belongs to the farm. But the farm is a cooperative so in a sense he does own it. He and the other farm workers collaborate on how best to manage the farm. There is much experimentation going on and regular meetings to report on successes or failures and to plan and organize work.
Emmanuel says he is very well paid because he has an innate ability to work with plants on an energy level. He regularly interacts with nature spirits that help with plant growth and well-being, and takes the plants’ suggestions seriously as to what individual plants might need, or what to do about various diseases and pests. He loves plants and they respond very well to his care. He has what we would call a “green thumb” and is very proud of this ability since it is one that is highly respected here. Most farm workers have this skill and those that don’t are tutored by the others until they develop it.
He himself and many of the workers were born on New Earth and will die here with a life span somewhat greater than we have. But there are some people who do not fit into this category. There are some who have come here directly from old Earth after they have died. They have bodies that are physical but in appearance look like they did when they were in the most vital time of their lives on Earth. These people can walk in and out of their bodies whenever they choose. They can work directly with the “Natives” here by using some great talent they had on Earth to create better conditions on New Earth, or they can form “think tanks” with others, both Native and otherwise, that work on specific problems. Emmanuel says that there are several “walk ins” working on the farm. They are not bosses and work right along side of the others, but they do have valuable insights stemming from past experiences in their former lives.
Another category of people are those that come from Earth in their sleep with no conscious knowledge when they return. They also use their talents and experience on Earth to help craft a better place, but they only come sporadically.
There are also a few people who come from Earth and remember their experience even though they are sleeping on Earth, or who, like me, are visiting in meditation without being in the sleep state. Emmanuel is rather surprised when I explain where I come from and why I am interested because he doesn’t see many like me.
Since I live in a farming community I am surprised not to see any machine sheds, tractors in the field or other farm machinery. I ask Emmanuel about it and he says they try to avoid using machines whenever possible because human touch is much more effective in producing healthy, productive plants. The kind of horticulture that relies on human/plant/nature spirit cooperation is so much more productive that it is possible to feed great numbers of people doing it this way. It is labor intensive and does take many more people, but the increase in productivity and nutrition means that people need less food and are willing to pay more. Consequently it is possible to make a good living farming this way, and the people doing it are those that love plants and outdoor, active work. Farm workers are usually very healthy and happy as a result.
Since I am from rural Wisconsin, I am also surprised to see no large trees surrounding the farm buildings. Emmanuel says they just haven’t gotten around to planting any. They are not sure they want trees because it would mean some of the land would be too shady to grow vegetables, and with this type of farming every square foot counts. This bothers me somewhat because I love trees. But Emmanuel reminds me that people who are raised in places without a lot of trees do not necessarily think trees are beautiful. In fact, he thinks trees spoil the view. To him, his farm is the most beautiful place on New Earth.
