Energy is constantly in motion. When we “enter the flow”, we seek to harmonize our energy with the flow of the universe so that moving is easy, change is delightful, and the process itself becomes more important than any bumps along the way.
When we “enter the flow”, we give up resistance. We stop battling the current by trying to swim upstream. We acknowledge the process by accepting the changes that come with perpetual motion. And we give up perfection.
Perfection is about stasis. Once you achieve perfection there is no place else to go. Our self-imposed beliefs about perfection limit our ability to see beyond and to discover potentials that are not yet visible. Our ideas of perfection stifle and confine us.
Perfection means always being successful, never making a mistake, and never breaking the bonds of that self-imposed prison. And we constantly beat ourselves up because we have not met our own expectations.
Seeking perfection dams the flow. It is only by failing, facing limitations and making mistakes that we break out, widen our horizons and find new opportunities. (See also “The Myth of Spiritual Perfection“.)
When we are hungry, we are willing to try foods we would never have tried before. When we fail we are offered new and important information about how to reach our goals. When we make mistakes, they are often opportunities to expand our horizons.
The importance of entering the flow was brought home to me once again last weekend when my watched stopped working. I assumed it needed a new battery and put it on the kitchen table to remind me to take it to town. But on Monday morning I went off and left it at home, much to my dismay.
I needed my watch, so at first I was upset. I had only a short time between my many appointments and knew that going home to get it would cause me to be late and/or stressed out. Even if I did go home and get it, I would then have no time to go get a battery. When I realized there were no good options, I knew I had a choice. I could resist and let my lapse of memory ruin my whole day, or I could find a way to enter the flow of the process. I chose to enter the flow.
It was only then that I remembered the many problems with my watch. Although I really liked the watch, it was old and the gold plating was coming off. My skin was sensitive to the metal underneath causing me to have to remove it at night. Sweat also reacted badly with the metal so I could not wear it during exercise or physical work. These thoughts came in a flash, and along with them, the realization that it was a new watch I needed, not a new battery. And I had just enough time between appointments to go to the store and pick out exactly what I wanted. What started as irritation and self- recrimination became a fun process and an opportunity to meet a need I was not even aware I had.
So the next time you make a mistake, feel like a failure, or encounter a limitation, ditch the perfection and enter the flow. It feels soooooooooo good.
