The end of an old year is a time when we often make resolutions. We choose to remake ourselves and move to a new level in some way, either physically, mentally or spiritually.
But making resolutions is not easy because often the ones we have made before have not been kept. So even the thought of making resolutions brings a big “ugh!” along with an image of hard work with no real result.
Change in the physical world is hard. This is because matter is a very dense energy vibrating very slowly. Therefore its natural state is one of stasis or rest. Moving physical matter from this natural state of rest takes much work, effort, and also some kind of force. Since the physical world is the only reality we have known until now, change through work, effort and force is the only way we know how to change anything, including ourselves.
At this time, in the first part of the 21st century, it is important to remember we are moving into a new era, an era where we are beginning to recognize that we are not only physical beings, but energy beings as well. In fact, our energetic bodies are much robust and powerful than our physical bodies.
Our efforts to change in the past have failed largely because we were trying to use the rules of the physical world to change ourselves, that is, to change something that is mostly energy. In order to change energy you have to use energetic rules, not physical ones. Since we were using the wrong rules, our efforts were not successful most of the time.
The good news is that change is much easier in the energetic realm than in the physical realm, which is why I choose to call it “transformation” rather than “change”. This is because the natural state of energy is flow or movement rather than stasis. It is much easier to change something that is moving rather than something at rest.
Think about the difference between moving a large flat rock and guiding a moving bicycle. Moving a large flat rock takes much effort and force, while guiding a moving bicycle takes only a slight wrist movement. In fact, too much effort, too much force on the handlebars of the bicycle would result in complete disaster.
Think also about the rules of martial arts (which are based on rules of energy), where the student is taught not to resist his opponent but rather to join with motion the opponent is already using, and redirect it another way.
When we try to force ourselves to change, we encounter a natural internal resistance that comes from using physical rules in the energy dimension. So the secret is to find the energy behind the habit or behavior we want to change, and then redirect it in a more constructive way.
For example, if overeating is a behavior you would like to transform, think about why you overeat. I tend to overeat because I really like food. I love the taste, the texture and the combination of flavors found in really good food. The thought of dieting brings immediate resistance, because I am restricting the flow of energy to something I really enjoy.
So my solution to my overeating problem was to eat much more slowly, chew well, savoring each bite as long a possible, and drink water in between bites to clear my palate for the next bite (the water also helps fill me up). I also decided to restrict my food intake only to foods I really love (why eat anything else?) Before I put anything in my mouth, I now ask myself if this is something I really would enjoy. If the answer is no, then it is much easier to decline. Consequently, I no longer overeat and I enjoy my food much more. It’s a win-win all around.
If worry is your principle stressor and you would like to change this tendency, think about the energy behind the worry, in other words, what benefit it brings you. We usually worry because we know bad things can happen and we want to avoid them as much as possible. And it is true that if we think about what bad things can happen and take precautions to avoid them, we are usually successful. The problem is, there are only some things that we have control over, and many of the things we worry about are beyond our control. Worrying about these things is pointless and brings no benefit, only stress.
So when you find yourself worrying, ask yourself if this is something you can do something about. If it is, do it. Expect the best but prepare for the worst. Then let it go. Think of it as being as easy as blowing the seeds from a dandelion.
If it is something that you can do nothing about, you can choose to trust that things will work out. Worrying is just using your imagination to bring you things you don’t want. Trusting, on the other hand, is using your imagination to bring what you do want. And intention and imagination are what move and direct energy.
Change in the physical dimension demands effort and force, and is brought about by cause and effect. Transformation in the energy realm uses intention and imagination, and is brought about by trust and synchronicity.
Do it the easy way. Choose transformation whenever you can.
